"Where there's a will, there's a way."Sometimes, the sheer persistence of a single idea is enough to propel a newcomer from the automotive world into the realm of fine jewelry. Designer Maddox (Max), who won gold at the 2015 International Creative Jewelry Design Competition, went on to earn global recognition again three years later, securing a spot among the top five finalists at the JNA International Jewelry Design Awards. This achievement instantly made Max a rising star in the world of fashion jewelry. But few know that Max wasn’t trained in jewelry or metalsmithing — in fact, he often jokes that he's a "Muggle" in the world of goldsmithing. With no formal background and not even a design degree, he calls himself a "mixed breed" — driven purely by an untameable designer’s spirit. Max recalls the moment his design soul was first awakened: A classmate had pierced a hole through a U.S. coin, then hammered it over a ring mandrel to shape it into a wearable ring. The delicate craftsmanship and soulful transformation of such a simple object captivated him — and he never looked back. Having no formal training, Max began traveling far and wide to acquire the skills he lacked. From wax carving, forging, and Keum-Boo (gold foil fusing) to mokume-gane (wood grain metal), he immersed himself in every technique he could find. He also incorporated the 3D digital processing skills he had studied during university, forging a unique path that would become the hallmark of Maddox xiao's 3D jewelry artistry.
